It’s 2020 and I’ve realized the benefits of RSS feeds. Yeah, I know. This app did everything I expected it to and did it fast and flawlessly; it loaded every single one of my sources perfectly, and impressively quick on a pretty bad connection too. I did it again later with additional feeds on a new OPML file and it took care of duplicates for me. Awesome! I haven’t tried adding a feed URL by smartphone/this app yet though. Maybe I’ll revise my review if I get to it, but I don’t add new sources often. Using the app is fabulous. It’s not flashy but it’s sensible, simple, and fast. Definitely feels rock-solid stable. After a quick test completely offline, it looks like articles remain available for reading, which is the #1 thing I want from a feed app. Great! Dark mode is a plus. I only have two minor complaints/requests as of far:
1) When reading the article, I didn’t know what the icons on the bottom row did. I figured it out with experimentation, but it would be helpful if I could long-press the icons and a tooltip pops up labeling the function.
2) When renaming a folder, I can trigger the “cancel” and “rename” buttons if I move my finger over either while dragging the cursor. Found out the hard way after I let go of the cursor and the rename box disappeared entirely when I wasn’t finished.
I really appreciate the light and dark mode support and native experience of the app. Swiping between the articles is great. Works well on iPhone and iPad. I kinda wish there were headers shown between days so I could easily see when I’ve advanced to the previous day’s content. I tend to open the app, scroll down to the bottom, then read up so I can read them in the order they were created. The Today section usually works well for this except I miss the content posted late the night before so I switch back and forth between that and All Unread which is a bit annoying. Overall, would recommend! Definitely can’t beat the price ha
NetNews Wire was an RSS pioneer. If I’m not mistaken, I paid for it years ago . . . and then other readers came along, were better, and I jumped ship. There are plenty of excellent readers out there, but this version of NNW is amazingly fast, simple to use, and minimalist. Over the years, apps became more sophisticated, adding so many features that ultimately just added complexity and bloat. While NNW is lacking in some areas, I just don’t need or want anything more that what NNW offers now. Polish, yes. Occasional UI improvements, sure. Added services, bring ‘me on. But, for the most part, NNW is fantastic as is and makes RSS reading a joy again. Thanks to the developer(s). Well done.
